Sumter County, FL – A tragic multi-vehicle collision on State Road 471 resulted in one fatality and left another driver seriously injured on the morning of July 7, 2024.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:05 AM when a Ford Expedition, driven by a 69-year-old man from Winter Garden, was traveling westbound on SR-50. As it approached the intersection with SR-471, the Ford ran a red traffic signal and collided with the passenger side of a Kenworth tractor-trailer transporting milk, driven by a 58-year-old man from North Port, who was traveling northbound on SR-471.

The impact caused both vehicles to be redirected northwest into the southbound lanes of SR-471. There, the Kenworth truck collided with a Harley Davidson motorcycle, which was traveling southbound in the left turn lane. The motorcycle was operated by a 70-year-old man from Lakeland, who suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the collision, the Kenworth truck came to rest along the shoulder of the highway, with its trailer overturning. Fortunately, the load of milk being transported was not spilled; however, the crash resulted in a significant fuel spill from the tractor-trailer, covering the roadway with scores of gallons of fuel.

The driver of the Kenworth truck sustained minor injuries. The driver of the Ford Expedition, who caused the initial collision by running the red light, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to determine the exact cause and circumstances leading up to the crash. Traffic in the area was heavily impacted as cleanup and investigation teams worked to clear the scene and manage the fuel spill.

Our thoughts are with the families affected by this devastating event.
