LAKE WALES, Fla. – Tragedy struck last night in Lake Wales as a 21-year-old local man, Vincent Thomas, Jr., was fatally shot during a dispute. The Polk County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is now investigating the incident.

According to initial reports, Thomas and at least three others drove to a residence on Northside Drive around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

Armed with a handgun, Thomas confronted a 20-year-old man outside the home, threatening to shoot him. The two men, who had attended Lake Wales High School together, were known to have had a previous disagreement.

During the heated confrontation, the resident grabbed a rifle and shot Thomas several times, hitting him at least twice. The shooter stayed at the scene and is cooperating with detectives.

Thomas's friends rushed him to Advent Health Lake Wales Hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries. Two of Thomas's friends were later arrested and charged with tampering with evidence and giving false information to law enforcement during the investigation.

Thomas had a history with the law, including arrests for battery on law enforcement officers, threats against a law enforcement officer, failure to appear, resisting arrest, and driving with a suspended license. At the time of the incident, he was on felony probation.
