Fire Destroys Historical Building

A fire broke out on Friday afternoon at the Rockhound Miner on the corner of Apache Trail and Mountain Road in Apache Junction









. Fire departments from Rural Metro, Mesa, Superstition and Gilbert responded. Thick black smoke was seen in the East Valley. The structure was built in 1939, and became abandoned in the early 1990's. With temperatures at 112°, the fire was a challenge for firefighters to extinguish the fire. At times, flames reached 20 feet. The entire structure was a complete loss. There were no injuries to report. The cause is unknown and under investigation.
