Santan, Gila River Indian Community – In the early hours of this morning, a tragic shooting incident resulted in the death of a Gila River Police officer and a civilian, with several others injured. At approximately 2:00 AM, Gila River Public Safety Dispatch received an emergency call reporting a disturbance at a home in District 4 of the Gila River Indian Community.

Officers from the Gila River Police Department (GRPD) responded to the scene. As they attempted to manage the disturbance, involving a large crowd, multiple gunshots were fired. Two GRPD officers and four individuals at the scene were struck by the gunfire.

The injured officers and civilians were quickly transported to local hospitals. Sadly, Officer Joshua Briese, who had been with the department for less than a year and was still undergoing Field Training, succumbed to his injuries.

Another GRPD officer remains in serious but stable condition. At least one other individual involved in the incident has also been pronounced deceased.

"Our hearts and prayers are with these police officers, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragic incident," stated a GRPD spokesperson. The community mourns the loss of Officer Briese and extends condolences to all affected by this senseless violence.

The Gila River Police Department is collaborating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Additional information will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Our thoughts are with the officer's family and the entire community.
