Haines City Firefighters Save Driver Trapped Under Semi on US 27
Haines City, FL – In the early hours of this morning, a dramatic and life-saving rescue unfolded at the intersection of US 27 and SR 544, as Haines City Fire Department responded to a severe vehicle accident involving a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck.
At approximately 3:52 AM, Haines City Battalion Chief 1 and Engine 2 were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered a four-door passenger vehicle had collided with the rear of a semi-truck. The impact lodged the vehicle’s hood underneath the truck, trapping the lone occupant inside.
Recognizing the urgency, Battalion Chief 1 immediately called for additional support from Haines City Engine 1 and Polk County Fire Rescue Tower 33. To ensure the safety of the rescue operation, authorities shut down all three lanes of southbound US 27, as well as northbound travel, to facilitate the arrival of Aeromed 5.
Polk County Fire Rescue Medic Rescue 30 assessed the situation and declared an adult male occupant as a trauma alert. Haines City Engine 1 quickly established a landing zone for Aeromed 5, which was dispatched to transport the patient to a regional medical center.
The combined efforts of Haines City and Polk County Fire Rescue teams led to a meticulous extrication process that lasted approximately 45 minutes. Once freed from the wreckage, the patient received immediate care from PCFR Medic Rescue 30 before being airlifted by Aeromed 5 for further treatment.
“Our firefighters and rescue teams displayed extraordinary courage and precision in the early hours of this morning,” stated Fire Chief Drew Neubrand. “In the face of a complex and dangerous situation, their quick actions and seamless coordination with our partners ensured that the patient received the critical care needed. This incident is a testament to the unwavering dedication and professionalism of our team and the importance of our collaborative efforts in safeguarding our community.”
Following the rescue, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation as normal traffic flow was gradually restored. The scene was officially handed over to PCSO once rescue operations concluded.
