Volusia County, FL — According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a tragic accident occurred late on the night of July 27, 2024, involving three vehicles on I-4 Eastbound at Mile Marker 106, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man from Deltona.
The incident took place at approximately 11:17 PM. The first vehicle, a 2011 Nissan Altima driven by the 28-year-old male, was reportedly traveling above the posted speed limit in the outside lane. According to witnesses at the scene, the driver of the Altima failed to notice two vehicles ahead: a 2016 Kia Optima driven by a 52-year-old male from DeBary and a 2020 Nissan Rogue driven by a 56-year-old male from Port Orange.
The sequence of events began when the Altima collided with the rear of the Kia Optima. The force of the collision pushed the Kia into the rear-right side of the Nissan Rogue. Following the initial impact, the Altima veered off the roadway to the right, onto the outside shoulder, where it struck a tree. The driver of the Altima, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been notified.
The drivers of the Kia Optima and the Nissan Rogue were both wearing seatbelts and did not sustain any injuries. They remained at the scene and were not transported to the hospital.
The Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed that the crash is still under investigation as they work to determine the exact cause and contributing factors.
This incident highlights the critical importance of adhering to speed limits and wearing seatbelts. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol continue to urge drivers to prioritize safety to prevent such devastating accidents.
