Delray, FL – According to the FDA, in a critical health alert, Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. has initiated an urgent recall of whole cucumbers after discovering potential contamination with Salmonella, a dangerous pathogen capable of causing severe and potentially fatal infections. This recall, which spans cucumbers shipped to several states from May 17th through May 21st, 2024, was announced following a positive test for Salmonella by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

Published by the FDA on June 1st, 2024, the recall warns of the life-threatening risks associated with consuming the contaminated produce. Vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at an especially high risk of severe illness or death. Even healthy individuals infected with Salmonella can suffer from acute symptoms such as high fever, severe diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, with potential for the bacteria to invade the bloodstream and cause more dire conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, or arthritis.

The cucumbers in question are dark green, approximately 1.5 - 2.0 inches in diameter, and 5-9 inches long, and were distributed in bulk across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Consumers are advised that mini cucumbers and English cucumbers are not part of this recall.

Consumers possessing any of the recalled cucumbers should immediately cease consumption, destroy the cucumbers, or return them to their place of purchase for a full refund. It is crucial that these items be removed from households to prevent any risk of infection.

Retail partners and distributors have been instructed to halt sales and quarantine any stock of the recalled cucumbers, removing them from commerce to prevent further exposure. Fresh Start Produce Sales is closely coordinating with the FDA to manage the recall and ensure public safety.

For more detailed information or to report health concerns related to the recalled cucumbers, consumers can contact Fresh Start Produce Sales at 1-888-364-2993, available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EDT.
