Winter Haven, FL – In a nightmarish turn of events, Polk County has been hit with its third rabies case of the year. On Friday, July 19, 2024, what seemed like an ordinary day quickly spiraled into horror when Polk County Sheriff's Animal Control Officers responded to a terrifying call on Avenue T NW in Winter Haven. A desperate cat owner, in a frantic attempt to break up a savage fight between his two cats, was viciously bitten and scratched by one of them. The following day, the cat responsible for the attack was found dead under mysterious circumstances.

The deceased cat was rushed to the State Laboratory in Tampa, where the worst fears were confirmed: it tested positive for rabies. This horrifying revelation has sent shockwaves of fear and anxiety throughout the community. The other cat, unvaccinated and potentially harboring the deadly virus, was surrendered to

Polk County Animal Control, amplifying the dread of further exposure.

The Florida Department of Health in Polk County is now urgently managing the treatment of the terrified owner, who faces the harrowing prospect of rabies exposure.

"Please make sure your pets are up to date on all their vaccines; being vaccinated can save your pet's life," implored Sheriff Grady Judd, underscoring the dire importance of pet vaccination in these perilous times.

This bone-chilling incident serves as a grim reminder to the public: never approach any animal displaying erratic or menacing behavior. If you suspect that you or your pet has been exposed to this deadly virus, contact the PCSO Animal Control Section without delay at 863.577.1762.

Stay alert, Winter Haven. The threat of rabies is a lurking terror that could strike when least expected. Your vigilance and prompt action are crucial to survival.
