Marana, Arizona – In a heartbreaking incident, a 2-year-old girl lost her life after being left in a hot car for between 30 and 60 minutes in triple-digit heat on Tuesday, July 9. The Marana Police Department and Northwest Fire District responded to an emergency call around 4 p.m. in the area of Paseo Rancho Acero, near North Camino De Oeste and West Cortaro Farms Road, regarding an unresponsive child inside a vehicle.

Despite immediate resuscitation efforts at the scene and swift transport to a hospital, the child was pronounced deceased upon arrival. The temperature in neighboring Tucson had soared to 111 degrees that day, creating a lethal environment inside the car.

Captain Tim Brunenkant of the Marana Police Department confirmed that the department's Criminal Investigations Unit is currently on scene, working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

This tragic loss adds to a grim statistic: at least nine children have died in hot cars across the United States so far this year, according to the national nonprofit organization KidsAndCars.org.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings about the dangers of leaving children in vehicles, explaining that the inside of a car can act like a greenhouse, with temperatures rising by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes and by as much as 50 degrees in under an hour.

The Marana Police Department urges all parents and caregivers to remain vigilant and take extra precautions to ensure the safety of children, especially during the sweltering summer months.

Further details about the incident are currently limited as the investigation continues. The Marana community is left mourning the loss of this young life, and the police department extends its deepest condolences to the family affected by this tragedy.
