Pinellas County, FL. - A tragic accident occurred late Saturday night on the Gandy Bridge, resulting in the death of a 33-year-old motorcyclist from Tampa.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident happened as a motorcycle, operated by the Tampa man, was traveling eastbound on US-92 at a very high rate of speed. Approaching the Hillsborough County line, the motorcyclist attempted to overtake a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 48-year-old man from St. Petersburg.
The collision occurred when the motorcycle struck the rear of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The impact caused the motorcycle to veer off the roadway, striking the concrete barrier. This redirected the motorcycle back into the roadway, where both the rider and the vehicle tumbled for several hundred feet before coming to a fiery halt.
Tragically, the rider of the motorcycle sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee managed to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop in the inside eastbound lane of US-92 and was not injured during the incident.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the excessive speed of the motorcycle and any potential contributing factors. Traffic on the Gandy Bridge was temporarily halted as emergency services responded to the scene, but it has since resumed.
This devastating accident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of high-speed driving. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
